This post was supposed to be ‘word of the month’, but ‘quote of the month’ feels more appropriate as the excitement (and inevitable disappointment) around the World Cup starts to grow.
Pundits and footballers provide a rich vein of amusing quotes, made up words and general gibberish. However, they are still regularly asked for their opinions which are then broadcast around the world.
“He dribbles a lot and the opposition don’t like it – you can see it all over their face” – Ron Atkinson
“Melted” – Steven Gerrard on being asked what his favourite cheese was
“Chile have three options, they can either win or they can lose” – Kevin Keegan
And then there is the king of commentators, John ‘Motty’ Motson with
“The World Cup is a truly international event” and
“Brazil – they’re so good it’s like they are running round the pitch playing with themselves”
